Occupational Health and Safety

Chris Jones Risk Management provides a comprehensive OHS consulting service.

The process is simple.

We begin by establishing your organisation's needs.  To do this we would normally conduct a formal audit of your OHS management system.  At the end of the audit we will have an agreed set of actions that are needed.

We can then help you to implement the programme.  The content of this programme, and the help required, will be specific to your organisation and industry, but is likely to include:

  • OHS training - including management, supervisor and employee training, induction training, and licence requirements.
  • Development and implementation of OHS policies and procedures.  This may best be done in a manual, an internal website, stand alone policies and documents, integration into existing procedures documentation, or, more commonly, a mixture of all these strategies.
  • Management information and accountability systems.
  • Employee consultation - such as safety committees, safety representatives, and toolbox meeting.
  • Employee communication procedures, and activities to promote safety and establish an appropriate safety culture.
  • Risk management procedures.
  • Management of sub-contractors and visitors.
  • Injury management procedures, including accident investigation and return to work policies and procedures.
  • Emergency procedures.

Once the programme is established, there will be a need to monitor progress and maintain continual improvement.

This can be achieved by regular monitoring, and typically, a re-audit at an agreed interval.

We can also assist in the development of internal monitoring procedures such as:

  • Management reports
  • External audits
  • Internal audits
  • Hazard inspection
  • Establishment of objectives and key performance indicators
  • Accident investigation procedures and reports
  • Accountability and performance measurement systems

Each of these elements of an OHS programme can be provided as a "stand-alone" service, including audits, risk assessments, training programmes, and the development of specific procedures.

Lets talk about due diligence.

There can be massive financial penalties on your organisation for breaches of the Occupational Health and Safety legislation.  A failure to control workers compensation costs will certainly impose a substantial burden.   Are your managers and directors aware of the potential fines and imprisonment that they can face?  Due diligence demands a pro-active approach to Occupational Health and Safety.  It is not enough to establish a policy.  There must be systems in place to ensure that policies and procedures are implemented at all levels within the organisation.
